Euthanasia Information
This is a difficult web page for us to write, and, if you're planning to use this service, almost certainly a difficult web page for you to read.
For counseling and grief management, we encourage you to investigate the following links:
1. The AVMA Pet Loss web site
2. University of California at Davis Pet Loss Hotline (We are not sure about the fees, if any)
3. Animal Friends Online
Here is also a poem that may send some comfort to your heart but may also send some tears to your eyes The Rainbow Bridge.
If you think that the time is right for euthanasia, our Housecall veterinary Service may be an ideal for you. We come to your home, office or anywhere your pet is, where there's the least possible disturbance for your special friend and we make that transition as comfortable, peaceful and dignified as it can possible ever be. We believe that the last few hours and moments of any beloved pet’s life should not be full of fear, anxiety, anguish or trauma.
A few things you'll want to be prepared for:
-When you make the appointment, we will want to know why you're considering euthanasia. We believe in doing what is right for the animal. We rarely hesitate to perform any euthanasia to alleviate an animal's suffering or to protect people from a dangerous animal. However, there are very few people that might request euthanasia for purposes of convenience or in order to avoid routine pet ownership responsibilities, we might disagree with this or similar scenarios.
-You should plan how you will bury or cremate your pet in advance. Advanced Veterinary Services can handle most cremation arrangements for you. We offer both individual cremation (with return of the ashes), and group cremation (in which the ashes are buried at the crematorium).
-Many pets lose control of their bowels &/or bladder as the sphincter tone relaxes. Rarely, pets will gasp for a last breath after they go to sleep. This is a possible reflex, but you should be prepared for it to happen if you choose to stay in the room.
If you have any questions at all or if you want advice to help decide if this is the right time for euthanasia or not, please don't hesitate to call us, (619)602-0600
